Pessimism and worry: how women’s perceptions and experiences of risk differ globally

The Lloyd’s Register Foundation World Risk Poll is a hugely valuable resource to understand how women perceive and experience a wide range of risks at the global scale. The 125,000 people interviewed for the 2021 Poll included 66,000 women across 121 counties, including places where little or no official data on these safety issues exists. Using this full dataset, it is possible to identify specific groups who may be at elevated risk, allowing for the creation and implementation of highly targeted intervention strategies.

Protecting peoples’ mental health and wellbeing as Covid-19 shifts the agenda

At the height of the pandemic in 2021, an operator on a maritime mental health hotline took a call from a first officer on a vessel moored in a port but unable to disembark due to Covid-19 restrictions. He told the operator ‘I’m literally standing on the ship, we’re in Korea, I’m from Korea, I can see the shore, that’s where my family is, and I cannot see them’. The frustration and worry of being separated from family and loved ones is well known to most seafarers, but the pandemic transformed this into an entirely new and devastating experience, where seafarers became literally trapped at sea despite being close to home.

Understanding climate change communications should not require higher education

Climate scientists have been warning about climate change since at least the 1950s. Global public opinion initially did not reveal much awareness about climate change including in the 2007 Gallup World Poll. However, the 2019 World Risk Poll marked a big shift and showed that over two thirds of people around the world saw climate change as a threat. That figure remains similar in 2021, despite the pandemic and associated economic problems, which suggests that climate change remains front of mind for the majority of people worldwide.

Food safety, nutrition, and the Lloyd’s Register Foundation World Risk Poll

During the Covid pandemic, awareness of the relationship of food and public health is on the rise. The transmission point of SARS-CoV-2 from animals to humans was likely a traditional Chinese food market, where wild animals and their meat were sold to consumers.
